The Definitive 3.0-3.5 Guide to Winning Pickleball Fundamentals

Updated: Mar 17

Winning pickleball fundamentals 3.0 - 3.5

Ok. Definitive may be a little out there!

But this Winning Pickleball Fundamentals Manual for 3.0 – 3.5 players is quite, very, really, really helpful. Since January we have been handing it out to all the participants in our clinics. Their feedback has been fantastic – which is what motivated us to start distributing it beyond our clinics.

Why We Wrote This Manual

We wrote this manual for the same reason we enjoy doing clinics – the satisfaction of knowing that players at the 3.0 – 3.5 level are getting a solid grounding in the not-so-complicated logic of playing good pickleball.

The method behind our madness is a couple of things:

  1. At the 3.0 – 3.5 level, most (like over 75% of) points are LOST, not won. That’s good players making mistakes and handing points to the other team. It’s different from making them win those points.

  2. Lots of players get to the 3.0 – 3.5 level because they’re athletic and skilled – but often, they have not learned the basics required to move even further. Now is the time to learn. For example, fundamental pickleball has a lot to do with getting to the net, playing at the net and keeping opponents away from the net. That’s different from other racquet sports.

  3. Finally, the fundamentals are not difficult. How tough is it to hit a deep slow serve. Easy? Right? Do you want to pick up four extra points a game? Try it! Those hard, low spinners? Guaranteed more are going out or into then net then winning points!

How the Manual is Set Up

To make it easy to read and use, we set up the manual in three sections and tables. The first is all about the fundamentals. It lays out what they are. Why they are fundamental. And, how to practice/drill each fundamental.

The second section lays out the top ten most common mistakes that cost either points or service losses. We think this is a really great motivator to start playing more consistently. There are almost 50 losses per game in the top ten mistakes! This section covers what they are. How many points or service losses per game are standard at the 3.0- 3.5 level. And, how to fix them. Fixing them makes winning pickleball much easier!

Finally, the third section covers the easiest winners in pickleball – including luck – which is commonly worth at least two points/game if you play it right (show up!).
